History

The following passage can be found in Trondheim Maritime Museum’s annual report from 1935:
”Trondheim Maritime Museum was founded after an initiative from the Director of the Seafarers’ School, K.S. Andorff, in the year 1919. Trondheim Sailors’ Union appointed a committee at his request, consisting of: Director K.S. Andorff, Captain I.M. Næss and Harbour Pilot P.A. Gaustad.”
The project was funded by the Norwegian Association of Shipping Companies, profits from the cinema, Trondheim Savings Bank, and private investors. For the first twenty years the museum was located on the top floor of the “House of Science”, in Erling Skakke’s Street 47b. The annual report from 1940 states:
“The board of Directors decided that it was necessary to move the collection down to the basement of the House of Science, where it will be kept for the time being.”

The museum has been located in the current building, called “Slaveriet”, since 1967, and the permanent exhibition was opened in 1971. Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum has been responsible for developing and running the Maritime Museum since 1998. We are currently in the process of upgrading both the building, collections and the exhibitions. During the last years Trondheim Port Authority has done extensive maintenance on the roof and walls, and inside, both floors have been given a fresh coat of paint.
